Belarus has become a member of the UN Commission for Sustainable Development

Elections to the subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council were held on 4 May in the UN Headquarters in New York.

14 new members of the UN Commission on Human Rights were elected. Armenia and Romania will represent the countries of the Eastern Europe. Sudan was also elected to the Commission. The UN Delegation protested against Sudan being nominated by a group of the African countries to the Commission on Human Rights . The US representative claimed that the government of Sudan is involved in «the ethnic cleansing» in the Darfur province and that Sudan's membership in the Commission will negatively affect the image of the Commission.

The new members of the Commission were elected for three years. Their mandate will be effected on 1 January 2005.

ECOSOC, to which the Commission on Human Rights reports, also held elections to such panels as the Commission on Population and Development, the Commission for Social Development and the Commission on Sustainable Development.

Ukraine and Russia were elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Children's Fund. Belarus became a member of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine became members of the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme/United Nations Population Fund. Russia was elected to the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development and to the Coordinating Board of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.

Sergey Martynov, a representative of the Republic of Belarus, was elected to the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
